Chelsea decided against pushing for the services of James Maddison due to their transfer policy despite Mauricio Pochettino ‘s interest.

According to a report by the Football Insider, Chelsea didn’t push for the services of James Maddison because of their transfer policy. The Blues cleared the way and allowed Tottenham Hotspur to acquire the services of the 26-year-old midfielder.

The Blues had a disappointing season last time out. Despite having spent a fortune on new signings, they could not even finish in the top half of the table. There was a lot of chopping and changing going around. Chelsea ended up using multiple managers throughout the campaign.

After the end of the season, they appointed Mauricio Pochettino as their boss. The former Tottenham Hotspur manager was handed the reigns of the club and he was given a decent amount of funds to make the necessary changes.

Pochettino was keen on bolstering his midfield and he wanted to add the Leicester City midfielder to his ranks. The Argentine manager is a huge admirer of the 26-year-old and believed signing Maddison would have given them an edge in the centre of the park. He could have added a lot of goals as well as creativity.

While Chelsea’s new boss was keen on having him in their ranks. they still decided against pushing for his services. The Blues didn’t make moves to land the Foxes midfielder at the club because of their transfer policy.

The London club have decided to bet on young players with high potential. Over the past few windows, all they have done is acquire exceptional young talents from across Europe. And, the club has made it clear that they won’t sign anyone above 25. As a result, they did not push for the 26-year-old England international.

The Blues instead acquired the services of Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo for a combined price of £173 million. As Chelsea decided against making a move for Maddison, Tottenham Hotspur had a much easier path and they ended up signing him for a fee of £40 million.

While there was competition from Newcastle United, Pochettino’s former club didn’t have much problem and they ended up securing his services for the next five years.
