Scottish giants Celtic are interested in acquiring the services of 24-year-old Liverpool shot-stopper Caoimhin Kelleher.
According to a report by The Sun, Celtic are interested in having Caoimhin Kelleher in their ranks. The 24-year-old shot-stopper has been on their radar for a while now. They also enquired about his availability during the summer transfer window. But the Merseyside club did not want him to negotiate his departure for certain reasons.
There was a lot of interest in Alisson Becker’s services from Saudi Pro League clubs. Given the kind of business the Middle East clubs had carried out in the summer, the Merseyside club feared that they might have to part ways with Becker.
As a result, Liverpool did not want to let Kelleher leave. And, on top of that, the Merseyside club did not have any time to sort out a backup option in case the 24-year-old departed from Anfield this past summer.
Kelleher joined the Liverpool youth setup back in 2015. He came through the ranks at the club and made it to their first team back in 2019. Despite having made it to their first team four years back, he has only featured in 21 matches and has kept a clean sheet on ten occasions.
Last season, he made a total of just five first-team appearances. The 24-year-old shot-stopper has lived in the shadows of Alisson, who is considered to be amongst the best in the world. With the Brazilian international still at the club, things are unlikely to change.
The Irish international wanted to leave during the summer, and he wanted to join a club that could offer him regular game time. But, unfortunately, things did not go according to plan. However, Kelleher could push for a move away from Liverpool in January, and there is interest from Celtic.
Brendan Rodgers is looking for a new number one. Celtic’s current number one Joe Hart is already 36 and his performances have gone downhill of late. Rodgers believes the Liverpool backup goalkeeper could do wonders for them and is pushing hard to have him as a long-term replacement for Hart.
According to the report, the chance of being Celtic’s number one for the next few years appeals to the 24-year-old. And, he could force his way to the Scottish club. With Rodgers keen on having Kelleher in his ranks, it will be interesting to see how things pan out.
