Vincent Kompany’s Burnley have agreed a deal to sign 21-year-old wide man Ian Maatsen, although he wants to remain at Chelsea.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Burnley are keen on having a new left-sided full-back in their ranks before the end of the deadline day. The newly-promoted Premier League club have identified Chelsea’s Ian Maatsen as a key transfer target and have managed to strike a deal with the Blues.

Vincent Kompany’s team have been after the signatures of Ian Maatsen for a while now. The 21-year-old was on loan at Burnley last season, and he played an important role in their promotion. As a result, Kompany is pushing for his signature.

They have been in talks with the Blues over a permanent transfer and have finally managed to reach an agreement. The two clubs have found a common ground and they have agreed on a transfer that will be worth £31.5 million as a package. With his contract running out in less than a year, offloading him for a decent fee seems to be the right decision by the Blues.

Burnley had an incredible run last season in the Championship under the guidance of former Manchester City skipper Kompany. They dominated the English second division and managed to return to the top flight.

Since gaining promotion, they have signed quite a few players and do seem to have the depth that will help them fight for survival. While the majority of the stuff seems sorted, they still need a new left-back. Charlie Taylor is Burnley’s only out-and-out left-back. And, Kompany wants to sign someone who can help their team take the next step.

They have identified Maatsen as someone who can walk into the playing XI. And, Burnley have been making moves of late to land him at the club. They were in talks with Chelsea and have managed to convince them. The transfer fee has been decided and there will be a sell-on clause in the contract.

While both parties seem to be in total agreement, the move is far from complete. The player’s side has not given the green light to the move. And, with time running out Kompany’s men will have to convince Maatsen about joining them or else they might miss out on a key transfer target.

Meanwhile, Matt Law has added that as things stand the 21-year-old is expected to stay at Chelsea and fight for a spot in the team. While there is still time for a change, he might end up staying at the London club for the 2023/24 season despite an agreement between Burnley and Chelsea.
