Tottenham Hotspur have decided to pull out of the race to sign 24-year-old Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba.
According to a report by Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur were keen on having Edmond Tapsoba in their ranks. They were in talks with Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen over a potential transfer. But, the North London club have now decided to pull out of the race.
Spurs were far from their best last season, and one of the major concerns throughout the 2022/23 window was their defence. As a result, their manager Ange Postecoglou has been keen on bolstering their defence ever since the start of the transfer window.
The North London club have already secured the services of Micky van de Ven this summer. Despite adding the Dutchman to his squad, Postecoglou is still on the lookout for another centre-back. He wants to have enough depth as well as quality in his backline.
The Australian manager is a big admirer of Edmond Tapsoba and would love to have him in their ranks. Spurs have been keeping a close eye on the 24-year-old for quite a while now. They even made moves to sign him. But, the £50 million asking price set by Bayer Leverkusen is turning out to be a major roadblock.
Xavi Alonso’s team have already sold Moussa Diaby to a Premier League club — Aston Villa — for a decent fee. They are now looking to build a strong enough team and won’t sell anyone unless there is an exceptional offer on the table. And they have already blocked an approach from Liverpool for Piero Hincapie.
In the case of Tapsoba, he still has three years left on his deal with the Bundesliga club. As a result, they are in a very strong position and are looking for nothing less than £50 million for the 24-year-old. Spurs are keen on having him in their ranks
But they are not ready to pay a fee of around £50 million for the Burkina Faso international. So Tottennham have decided to drop their interest in the services of Edmond Tapsoba. A few other English clubs are also interested in the Bayer Leverkusen defender. But given the £50 million price tag, a transfer in the ongoing window looks unlikely.
