Che Adams is reportedly closing on a swift Premier League return with Everton in a deal worth around £15 million.
That’s according to a report from Daily Telegraph, which states Everton have upped an initial £12 million bid to £15 million and are now closing in on the signing of Southampton striker Che Adams.
This comes after the Toffees’ embarrassing 4-0 defeat at Aston Villa, which leaves them rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table after losing both of their opening two matches. Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has had a string of fitness issues over the last two seasons, also sustained a nasty-looking facial injury during the first half after a collision with Emiliano Martinez.
The incident once again underlined Everton’s need for attacking reinforcements on a day where they looked toothless in attack once again and lacking a real focal point. While Everton have signed 19-year-old Youssef Chermiti from Sporting CP, he is deemed as someone for the future rather than the present. And after being linked with countless strikers throughout this summer, it appears they have finally landed on one name.
The Toffees are now upping their efforts in the transfer market. Southampton recently turned down a £12 million bid from Everton for Che Adams. The Merseysiders are now back in with an improved offer and are increasingly confident of sealing the deal. The Telegraph adds that Everton are in the advanced “stages of agreeing a fee and payment structure” with the Saints.
The Scotland international is wanted by a number of Premier League sides this summer, including the likes of Crystal Palace, Fulham, and Wolves. But it is Everton that have made the first significant move to try and get a deal over the line, and are now close to landing his signature.
The 27-year-old is in the last year of his contract with the Championship outfit and is eager to return to the Premier League. So the Saints could be forced to sell him this summer. He scored ten goals in all competitions last season as Southampton suffered relegation back to the second tier.
Despite the rumours surrounding his imminent future, Adams has remained professional and has netted three goals in as many games for Russell Martin’s side this season in the Championship. He signed from Birmingham in 2019 for £15 million and has gone on to make almost 150 appearances for the St. Mary’s outfit, scoring 33 times in that time.
Although he has never been a prolific goalscorer, Adams bears the profile and physicality of a Sean Dyche-type robust centre-forward and would fit in very nicely at Goodison Park. The mass exodus at Southampton has hardly been surprising. They were always likely to face a run on their best and brightest this summer following their demotion last time out. And so it has been proven.
The likes of Mohammed Salisu, Mislav Orsic, Ibrahima Diallo, and Mohamed Elyounoussi have already left the building and could soon be joined by a slew of other big names – including Romeo Lavia, Valentino Livramento, James Ward-Prowse, and Duje Caleta-Car, among others. And striker Adams could be next on the list.
