Liverpool and West Ham United are reportedly interested in signing Ecuador international defender Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen.

According to Fussball Transfers, Liverpool are keen on Piero Hincapie, and they will face competition from West Ham United. The Reds need to sign a quality central defender this summer, and the Bayer Leverkusen centre-back would be a superb long-term acquisition.

The Ecuadorian international has been linked with clubs like Tottenham Hotspur as well. It will be interesting to see if Liverpool follow up on their interest with a concrete proposal to sign the player in the next few days.

The Reds looked vulnerable defensively last season, and players like Joel Matip and Joe Gomez were quite mediocre with their performances. Jurgen Klopp should look to bring in an upgrade this summer, and Hincapie would be a quality signing.

Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk are the only reliable defenders at the club. So Liverpool need to add more depth to that position. The Reds will be hoping to compete for the league title this season and will also want to get back into the Champions League.

Signing a quality player like Hincapie would help them tighten up defensively and provide them with the platform to execute their high-intensity attacking style of play. Meanwhile, West Ham United could use a reliable defender as well.

David Moyes needs a well-drilled defensive unit in order to do well in the Premier League this season, and Hincapie will certainly improve them defensively. The opportunity to play in the Premier League will be an exciting option for the player, and the 21-year-old is likely to be tempted to join the two clubs.

Both Liverpool and West Ham will be competing in the Europa League this season, and they will be attractive destinations for the player. It will be interesting to see which of the two clubs manage to agree on a deal with Bayer Leverkusen.

The Bundesliga club value the player highly, and they are unlikely to let him leave for cheap. It is fair to assume that the two Premier League outfits will have to pay a premium in order to secure his signature.

Working under a top-class manager like Klopp could help the 21-year-old improve further and fulfil his tremendous potential. The German manager has helped nurture a number of talented young players during his time at Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool. He could play a key role in the development of the Ecuador international as well.
