Chelsea make move for Jeremy Doku

Chelsea have failed with an improved offer to sign Moises Caicedo from Brighton & Hove Albion in the ongoing summer transfer window.

Chelsea are reportedly keen on signing Jeremy Doku from the Ligue 1 club Rennes, having submitted an enquiry for him.

A report from 90min claims that Chelsea have now made an enquiry to sign Jeremy Doku. The Belgian international is also a target for Manchester City. But Chelsea’s emergence in the race to sign him from Ligue 1 club Stade Rennais changes the equation.

The 21-year-old has been linked with a move to the Premier League in the past as well. And recent reports have linked him with Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, and Manchester City. So it remains to be seen whether Chelsea can bring him to England ahead of the competition.

Doku has done quite well for the Ligue 1 club, and he has the potential to develop into an important first-team player for Chelsea as well. The Blues are clearly looking to bring in a quality winger this summer and they have been linked with players like Brennan Johnson and Michael Olise as well.

A move for Olise was thought to be close. But the deal has now collapsed and the player has signed a new long-term contract with Crystal Palace. It appears that Doku is now an alternative to the French winger.

The Belgian was regarded as one of the best young talents in world football a few seasons ago, and he has the potential to develop into a top-class Premier League winger. He will add pace, flair and trickery in the final third. Someone like him could help Chelsea open up deep defences, and the Blues could certainly use some cutting-edge in the final third.

Chelsea struggled to score goals consistently last season, and Doku will certainly help create goalscoring opportunities for his teammates. However, the 21-year-old might find it difficult to hold down a regular starting spot at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues already have a number of quality wingers, and Mauricio Pochettino might need to provide the 21-year-old with gametime assurances before a deal can be done. The Belgian will not want to sit on the bench at a big club and he needs to play regularly at this stage of his career.

The opportunity to join a big club like Chelsea will be an exciting option for the player, and it remains to be seen how the situation unfolds over the next few days. But Manchester City might be a more attractive destination for him.
