Newcastle United are reportedly looking to revive interest in Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney and are eyeing a season-long loan for the Scotland international before the transfer window slams shut.

Newcastle United are apparently stepping up their long-running pursuit of Kieran Tierney to provide additional competition at left-back. That is according to a report from Daily Telegraph, which says the Magpies are set to finally make their move and are doubling down on a season-long loan deal.

Newcastle United are a club rejuvenated under Eddie Howe and the club’s uber-rich owners. With Dan Ashworth’s transfer nous, Eddie Howe’s coaching, and a decent level of investment from up top, it is unsurprising that the north-east club have already qualified for the Champions League, even if it is a year or two ahead of schedule.

Progress made under Howe’s leadership has been astounding at times, with the likes of Miguel Almiron, Dan Burn, Jacob Murphy, and Sean Longstaff maximising every ounce of their potential. That said, in order to push on as a club, the Magpies were always going to have to recruit wisely during this summer’s transfer window if they wanted to compete at the highest level.

To that end, Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes, and Valentino Livramento are superb pieces of business. But they still need strength in depth at the right centre-back and left-back positions. Marc Cucurella and Kieran Tierney are two players on their radar to address the left-back depth issue.

It is understood the Scotland international is Howe’s preferred choice. Tierney has been linked with a departure from the Emirates, having seen his place taken by Oleksandr Zinchenko last season. Injuries and a loss of form meant the former Celtic man made just six Premier League starts in 2022/23.

The left-back was incredibly left out of the Gunners’ 20-man squad for Saturday’s Premier League opener at home to Nottingham Forest, despite being deemed fit for the game. It now looks certain that the former Celtic star will depart the Emirates four years after his £25 million move from Parkhead. However, concerns over the extent of the injury to summer signing Jurrien Timber could have a bearing on the Scotsman’s departure.

Timber sustained a knock in the first half of Arsenal’s Premier League opener against Forest. And while he was sent back out for the second half, he pulled up again soon after the interval, holding his right knee and calf, and was ultimately forced to hobble off.

The Telegraph reports that Newcastle are considering a loan offer with a potential obligation to buy next summer. Arsenal have already rejected a season-long loan offer for Tierney from Real Sociedad, making it clear they would rather sell him this summer.

However, if there are a lack of suitors in the market, they could be willing to sanction a loan deal if a significant fee is guaranteed in 12 months. And that would help Newcastle navigate potential Financial Fair Play issues. It will be interesting to see how this situation plays out in the coming days.

Cheapskates. Why would Arsenal strengthen a potential rival and receive nothing in return. What a dumb article!
