Napoli are closing in on the signatures of 27-year-old Tottenham Hotspur attacking midfielder Giovani Lo Celso.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport via Sport Witness, Napoli are looking to add a new attacking midfielder to their ranks before the end of the transfer window. The Serie A champions are looking to bolster their midfield and have their eyes set on Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovani Lo Celso.
The Partenopei had an exceptional season last time out as they went on to end their three-decade-long drought for a league title. Napoli were exceptional throughout but things have changed since then.
Their manager Luciano Spalletti has left the club and has taken a break for managerial roles. On top of that, a few of their star players have left the club. Despite receiving a few setbacks before the start of the new season, Napoli are trying to reinforce their squad so that they can defend their league title and put up a decent show in the UEFA Champions League.
The Serie A champions’ priority at this point in time is to acquire the services of Gabri Veiga. While they are trying to land the 21-year-old at the club, they have identified Tottenham’s Lo Celso as an alternative transfer target.
The 27-year-old joined Spurs back in 2019. He initially joined them on a season-long loan that was made permanent for a €32 million fee in the following summer. While he was expected to cement his spot in the starting XI, the Argentine international has failed to live up to the expectations.
Last season, Lo Celso was on loan at Villarreal and he ended up featuring in a total of 29 matches. The former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder contributed towards five goals. He was on the pitch for less than 1,500 minutes.
The Spanish club were not really confident about his abilities and decided against signing him on a permanent basis. Meanwhile, Napoli were in talks with Tottenham Hotspur over a potential deal. The talks were in advanced stages, but they hit a standstill as Spurs’ focus was on the Harry Kane transfer.
