Chelsea are reportedly considering move for the former Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel to replace Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga is set to join Real Madrid, and the Blues will have to bring in a quality replacement as per The Guardian. They have already signed Robert Sanchez from Brighton & Hove Albion this summer, and Kasper Schmeichel has now emerged as a target.
The 36-year-old goalkeeper is currently playing for French outfit OGC Nice, and he has done quite well in Ligue 1. Schmeichel is a proven performer in the Premier League, and he has won the title with Leicester City in the past. He could prove to be a quality backup option to Sanchez this season.
It remains to be seen whether Chelsea can secure an agreement with the French club for the experienced goalkeeper. But the opportunity to join one of the biggest clubs in England could prove to be tempting for Schmeichel, and he might be keen on a return to the Premier League.
The 36-year-old goalkeeper is certainly good enough to start for Chelsea, and he will be hoping to compete for the first-team spot with summer signing Robert Sanchez. The former Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper struggled for regular game time with the Seagulls last season.
So he will be determined to establish himself as the first-choice keeper at Stamford Bridge as well. Meanwhile, a healthy competition for places between two high-quality goalkeepers will only help Chelsea improve as a squad.
The Blues had a disappointing 2022/23 year and will be hoping to make amends and secure Champions League qualification. Chelsea have a talented squad, and there is no reason why they cannot compete for domestic trophies as well.
Schmeichel has Premier League experience and the mentality to thrive at a big club. In addition, he could be available for a reasonable price as well. The 36-year-old is unlikely to cost a premium this summer.
Meanwhile, Kepa Arrizabalaga has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich as well but has chosen to move to Real Madrid on a season-long loan as a replacement for Thibaut Courtois, who suffered a serious knee injury earlier this week.
Chelsea paid £71.6 million to sign the Spanish goalkeeper from Athletic Club. But he has not been able to live up to the expectations at Stamford Bridge. It will be interesting to see if Chelsea decide to sell him permanently at the end of the season.
