Montpellier reject Chelsea bid for Elye Wahi

Chelsea have suffered a blow in their pursuit of the Montpellier striker Elye Wahi, with the Ligue 1 club rejecting their bid.

Montpellier have now refused to accept an offer from Chelsea for Elye Wahi, according to a report from RMC Sport. The Premier League club are planning to sign the young French striker before loaning him out to RC Strasbourg.

The 20-year-old is highly rated in France, and he had an impressive campaign last year, scoring 19 goals across all competitions. Apparently, the French outfit value him at €50-60 million, and it remains to be seen whether Chelsea are ready to pay up for him.

The details of the Chelsea offer have not been revealed by the French publication. But it is believed that the proposal has been deemed insufficient by the Montpellier management. The French outfit have confirmed that they have received just one official offer for the talented young striker, which was from Chelsea. The Blues need to bring in quality attackers, and Wahi would be a superb long-term investment.

The 20-year-old has the potential to develop into a key player for Chelsea, and regular football in the Premier League will only help him improve further. The opportunity to play in England will be an attractive proposition for the player, and Chelsea are certainly one of the biggest clubs in Europe.

It would be a major step up in his career, and it remains to be seen whether he can secure a move to Stamford Bridge before the summer transfer window closes. The talented young striker needs to play regularly at this stage of his career in order to continue his development. Regular football at Montpellier helped him do well last season.

But it remains to be seen under Chelsea are prepared to provide him with first-team assurances if they can get a deal done. The Blues have recently signed Nicolas Jackson in order to improve their attack. The former Villarreal attacker is expected to compete with Wahi for the starting spot if the Blues can convince the French club to sell the 20-year-old.

Chelsea certainly have the financial resources to pay the reported asking price. The valuation might seem like a premium right now. But the talented youngster could end up fulfilling his potential with them and the deal could look like a bargain in the long run.
