Newcastle United have reportedly finally agreed a deal to sign Southampton right-back Tino Livramento worth £40 million, including add-ons.

According to The Athletic, Newcastle United have finally secured an agreement with Southampton to sign prodigious full-back Tino Livramento. The Magpies have had two previous bids rejected by the Saints but were determined to sign the highly-rated right-back, viewed as the ideal long-term replacement for skipper Kieran Trippier.

Southampton were holding out for close to £40 million for Livramento’s services this summer. But Newcastle only valued the player at closer to £30 million. Chelsea’s buy-back and sell-on clauses in their deal to sell Livramento to Southampton proved a major hurdle in recent talks between the Magpies and the Saints.

The Blues sold their academy graduate to the St. Mary’s outfit for £4 million back in 2021, but inserted a hefty sell-on clause into the deal. Chelsea are set to earn a sizable portion of Southampton’s profit on the full-back, which is estimated to be in excess of £10 million.

That clause forced Russell Martin’s team to play hardball throughout the summer. The south coast outfit didn’t budge from their asking price for Livramento until this point, and they got what they wanted, with Newcastle pushing the boat out to land the versatile defender’s signature.

Livramento will not feature in Southampton’s Championship opener at Sheffield Wednesday after an agreement has been reached between all the parties involved in this deal. The total financial package for this transfer operation is reported to be over £35 million, plus around £5 million in add-ons.

The Magpies have already booked the medical for Livramento, and personal terms are not expected to be an issue in the coming days. If all goes as planned, the 20-year-old will become the Magpies’ fourth signing in the current transfer window after the arrivals of Sandro Tonali, Yankuba Minteh, and Harvey Barnes. Livramento’s addition to the Newcastle squad is expected to add a lot of quality to the team.

The Southampton star only returned from an unfortunate anterior cruciate ligament injury at the end of the 2022/23 campaign, making just two substitute appearances after 13 months on the sidelines.

However, that should not take away anything from how impressive he looked in his first season at St. Mary’s, where he notched one goal and two assists from 32 outings. Livramento appeared well-rounded in every way: ball-playing, effective, skilful, and a perfect blend of pace, intensity, and power to overwhelm his opponent. It remains to be seen whether he can hit those pre-injury levels.

That said, the youngster arrives in a pretty good environment to gradually build his match sharpness and will initially be required to only provide cover and competition for current first-choice Trippier. His arrival could well see young prospect Harrison Ashby, who impressed during their U.S. pre-season tour, head out on a developmental loan, with a season-long temporary move to Championship outfit Swansea in the works.
