Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly closing in on a £30 million deal for Wolfsburg defender and Liverpool target Micky van de Ven after “positive talks” this week.
According to Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur are increasingly confident of closing in on a major deal to land Wolfsburg defender Micky van de Ven despite competition from fellow Premier League rivals Liverpool.
Spurs fans will be pleased to hear that this transfer saga is finally approaching a successful conclusion. Tottenham have been trying to sign van de Ven for a while now, even going back to June, when it was claimed that a deal for the Dutchman was nearing completion.
However, there have been reports since that Wolfsburg have been trying to bump up the asking price, which resulted in a hold-up in negotiations. It now seems they have finally had a breakthrough in their talks with the German outfit. Postecoglou’s side have already agreed personal terms with the Dutch defender, and Tottenham now seem confident in landing a deal.
If Spurs can get the deal done quickly, van de Ven would become their fourth signing of the summer. James Maddison, Guglielmo Vicario, and Manor Solomon have already arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium ahead of the new season. They have also signed Dejan Kulusevski and Pedro Porro on a permanent basis following successful loan spells with the club last season.
It’s no secret that Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou is on the lookout for rearguard reinforcements this summer after the Lilywhites conceded 63 goals during the 2022/23 Premier League season.
Linked with a host of centre-backs as they look to take their backline to the next level, Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Edmond Tapsoba and Wolfsburg’s Van de Ven emerged as top targets on Spurs’ wishlist following their impressive campaign in Germany last term.
With Bayer Leverkusen not ready to budge on their asking price of over £40 million for Tapsoba, van de Ven has been earmarked as the priority target to strengthen Spurs’ defence this summer. The 22-year-old enjoyed an excellent breakout campaign in the Bundesliga last season, making 33 appearances for Wolfsburg.
Renowned for his excellent ball-carrying and game-reading abilities, he would be a perfect fit for Postecoglou, who prefers a possession-based attacking style of play. And now, Tottenham seem like they are close to signing the Dutchman in a £30 million deal.
He was also a target for Liverpool earlier in the window and was said to be “open” to an Anfield move with his former sporting director Jorge Schmadtke recently appointed at the Reds, but the Dutch defender looks to be on the verge of completing a move to North London, with the deal at an advanced stage.
