West Ham United are optimistic about signing James Ward-Prowse as talks with Southampton are at an advanced stage.

According to The Times, West Ham United are confident about signing James Ward-Prowse, with talks advanced between the two clubs. Southampton are asking for around £40 million for the 28-year-old midfielder, with the Hammers so far reluctant to match that demand.

Since Spouthampotn’s relegation from the Premier League last season, James Ward-Prowse had gone under the radar. The 28-year-old has been one of their consistent performers over the years. And it is quite surprising he has stayed with the Saints for this long.

The current window is a great opportunity for the midfielder to make a move to another Premier League side. But Southampton’s asking price could prove a problem. West Ham were expected to lodge an improved offer, with many outlets suggesting they must have done that with a £30 million bid.

That, too, seems short of Southampton’s £40 million asking price, as few other outlets suggest West Ham might even walk away if the valuation is not lowered. In any case, the Hammers have identified other midfielders, with a move for Denis Zakaria also close.

The main agenda for David Moyes was to adequately replace Declan Rice, who departed for Arsenal last month. So far, West Ham are the only club not to make a simmer signing. And recently Ajax hijacked their prospective move for Carlos Borges from Manchester City.

Meanwhile, Ward-Prowse could year to return to the Premier League as he chases the Premier League record for the most direct free-kicks, currently held by David Beckham. The Saints captain is only one behind the former England skipper.

Meanwhile, West Ham continue to hold advanced talks with Southampton to find an agreement for Ward-Prowse. This particular transfer saga has all the ingredients to drag on until the end of the window, which will not suit the Hammers.

Ward-Prowse seems like the only target the Hammers have gone this close to signing, and the 28-year-old also represents a Moyes-type player. Hence, these are crucial days for the Hammers to progress, get this signing over the line, and kickstart their summer transfer business.
