Turkish giants Galatasaray have reportedly submitted a second offer for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Tanguy Ndombele in the region of €8 million.
Turkish side Galatasaray have returned to Tottenham Hotspur with a fresh bid for fringe midfielder Tanguy Ndombele. That’s according to Turkish football journalist Ertan Suzgun, who says Galatasaray have upped their original offer to €8 million and will pay the fee in shorter instalments, under four years.
The French midfielder joined Spurs from Olympique Lyonnais in the summer of 2019 for a then-club-record €62 million fee; however, he’s now worth an eighth of that if the Turkish side’s bid is accepted. And while he impressed under Mauricio Pochettino, he has failed to settle thereafter and has been unable to push on and establish himself as a mainstay in Spurs midfield under multiple managers.
The 26-year-old, who has seven France caps, has returned to Spurs for pre-season after spending the last year on loan at Italian side Napoli, where he helped the Naples-based outfit win the Scudetto, albeit in a bit-part role.
There have been reports that new boss Ange Postecoglou wanted to give the midfielder a chance to prove himself, with the Australian said to have been a longtime admirer of the Frenchman, but he has yet to appear in any friendlies under Ange Postecoglou thus far and is just returning from injury.
L’Equipe even claimed that Tottenham had turned down an offer of €20 million from Napoli for Ndombele, with fresh optimism at the club that Ndombele could resurrect his Spurs career under the new regime.
However, reports from Turkey have continued to suggest that Galatasaray are keen on landing the midfielder, and a deal can be done. Tottenham will probably reject Gala’s latest bid, and you do wonder just how many chances the club can give the midfielder to impress before they cut their losses.
It seems foolish to sell Ndombele for €8 million. It’s an amount that has no bearing on Tottenham. The issue for Spurs, though, is that the Frenchman is still occupying a good chunk of their wage bill. His swollen £200,000-a-week contract means he will soon become the joint-highest-paid player on Tottenham’s payroll if Harry Kane leaves for Bayern Munich, which most believe will be the case.
Likewise, Ndombele needs to leave Tottenham to get his career back on track. At 26 years old, he is still young enough to get back to peak form ahead of his prime, but he needs regular minutes under his belt to build consistency.
