Tottenham have asked for €42 million to sell Atletico Madrid target Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, as Diego Simeone wants the Danish midfielder.

According to MARCA, Atletico Madrid must pay €42 million to sign Pierre-Emile-Hojbjerg, with Tottenham ready to sell. Diego Simeone wants a new midfielder ahead of the new season after losing the race to sign Marco Verratti.

Diego Simeone is currently working on a shoe-string budget to strengthen his squad. Atletico Madrid have made some decent sales in the off-season but nothing that brings a substantial amount of cash to reinforce the side ahead of the new season.

Simeone wanted a new midfielder and had hoped to sign Marco Verratti. The Italian midfielder has now agreed terms with Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia and is ready to leave PSG in the coming days. It is a major setback for Atletico and their Argentine boss, who could re-ignite their interest in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The Danish star was one of the better performers at Tottenham last season, but Ange Postecoglou wants to upgrade the midfield position. They would need to replace the Dane if he departs, but Spurs are already working on selling Hojbjerg amid interest in the midfielder.

Hojbjerg remains linked with Atletico Madrid. But the Spanish giants have now learnt Tottenham’s asking price for the midfielder. Spurs reportedly want €42 million to sell the 27-year-old.

If Tottenham manage that, they will make a substantial profit on an investment close to €17 million in Hojbjerg three years ago. Meanwhile, La Liga giants Atletico Madrid are not in a position to pay that much, which could force Simeone to conduct more sales to offset the price tag.

It is becoming difficult for Atletico Madrid, who feel Hojbjerg will improve their setup and help them challenge for honours next season. Meanwhile, Tottenham are already looking at replacement options, with Barcelona’s Franck Kessie a primary target.

Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher and Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz are potential options. But there are plenty of complications with pursuing either midfielder. As for Hojbjerg, some fans will disagree with the 27-year-old midfielder’s sale, although it is a more tactical change than anything.

Hojberg has been an everpresent member at Tottenham since joining from Southampton in 2020. He has since managed 145 appearances in all competitions, scoring ten goals. His loss would need ample replacement, although Atletico Madrid would hope Spurs would reduce the €42 million asking price to facilitate a smooth transaction.
