Liverpool make headway in Romeo Lavia pursuit

Liverpool are optimistic about acquiring the services of 19-year-old midfielder Romeo Lavia amidst interest from Chelsea and Arsenal.

According to a report by Football Insider, Liverpool are keen on having Romeo Lavia in their ranks ahead of next season. The Merseyside club have been interested in the teenager since the start of the transfer window and are still in contact with Southampton over a potential deal for the Belgian international.

Liverpool decided against renewing the contracts of three of their senior midfielders and allowed them to leave for free after the end of the 2022-23 season. Post that they acquired the services of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.

While the midfield overhaul was almost complete, the plans have changed of late. With Fabinho and Jordan Henderson also set to leave the club for the Saudi Pro League, Jurgen Klopp’s men will re-enter the market for multiple midfielders.

Their priority at this point in time is to acquire the services of Lavia who was on fire last season. While he failed to help the Saints survive in the English top flight, the teenager did put in some impressive performances in his very first full season in the English top flight.

He featured in a total of 34 matches and racked up close to 2500 minutes for their first team. And, even contributed towards two goals. On the back of his impressive performances as a defensive midfielder, Jurgen Klopp is convinced about his potential.

But, Liverpool are not the only club keen on having him in their ranks. Even Chelsea and Arsenal are after his signatures. With Thomas Partey’s future at Arsenal uncertain, they have their eyes set on the 19-year-old who is capable enough to feature as a central as well as defensive midfielder.

Meanwhile, the Blues recently parted ways with N’Golo Kante and are yet to secure a replacement for the French World Cup winner. While their priority is to sign Moisés Caicedo, they also have their eyes on the 19-year-old.

Despite interest from Chelsea and Arsenal, Liverpool remain confident about striking a deal with Southampton. With the player convinced about the project under Klopp and keen on making the move to Anfield, the Merseyside club have an advantage over others.

The Saints are looking for a fee close to £50 million while Liverpool are ready to pay around £40 million. Once the price is agreed, the Merseyside club believe they can wrap it up quickly. And, according to the report, they want to get it done before the end of the month to ensure he is ready for the start of next season.
