Manchester United have reportedly knocked back a loan approach from Borussia Dortmund to re-sign Jadon Sancho as Tottenham step back from a potential swoop for the English winger.
According to Daily Star, Manchester United have rejected a “sneaky” loan bid from Borussia Dortmund for Jadon Sancho, who is also on the radar of Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
The England international joined Manchester United in the summer of 2021 in a £73 million deal from German side Borussia Dortmund. However, the 23-year-old has looked a shell of the man who racked up 89 goal contributions for Dortmund in 104 Bundesliga appearances.
Sancho has delivered a number of anonymous performances and has scored only 12 goals in 79 games for Manchester United over the past two seasons. It included seven strikes in 41 games during Erik ten Hag’s debut campaign in charge at Old Trafford.
It is fair to say he is yet to truly hit the heights predicted for him in his Old Trafford career, and recent reports have suggested the Red Devils are prepared to take a hit to sell him on for around £45 million.
One thing they do not seem keen to do, however, is sanction a straight loan deal for the 23-year-old. As per Daily Star, Manchester United have rebuffed a loan approach from Dortmund out of hand, though they remain open to sanctioning a permanent exit for the fringe star if the price is right.
Although Manchester United have turned down Dortmund’s advances, a loan deal would not have been a bad idea. The England international previously flourished for the German giants, spending four years at the club between 2017 and 2021. If he can rediscover his confidence and best form, he could have returned to Old Trafford with a better stock than he currently has.
Tottenham Hotspur are apparently interested in signing Sancho. But they may not actually make a move for the 23-year-old, having just signed attacking midfielder James Maddison from Leicester City and with other priority positions.
Even if Tottenham decide to fork out a £45 million bid for the winger down the line this summer, they face a major stumbling block due to his current weekly wages. Sancho is currently the joint-highest earner at £350,000 per week at Manchester United, which Tottenham simply cannot afford to meet.
By the looks of things, a summer move for Sancho looks highly unlikely, as it would need the Red Devils to hand the player a hefty pay-off to convince him to take a sizeable pay cut elsewhere.
With the recent emergence of Alejandro Garnacho, Sancho has fallen further down the pecking order. But he should continue to fight for his sport at Old Trafford next term, which could be a make-or-break season for him under Ten Hag.
