Albert Sambi Lokonga would open his doors for a switch to Burnley, but Vincent Kompany still has to agree on a deal with Arsenal.
According to The Sun, Albert Sambi Lokonga is getting close to signing for Burnley ahead of the new season. Arsenal are keen to offload the Belgian midfielder, while Vincent Kompany wants a reunion with the 23-year-old. The two clubs will have to come to a compromise as the Gunners look for a permanent deal.
Burnley are not flush with cash and will aim to recreate the model that proved successful last season. Vincent Kompany is seeking ways to strengthen his squad and remains keen to add quality reinforcements. One of his requirements points towards a midfielder, with several options being discussed.
Burnley first showed interest in Albert Sambi Lokonga as soon as their promotion to the Premier League was confirmed. Kompany would like a reunion with the 23-year-old Arsenal star he coached while at Anderlecht. As things stand, the Belgian is keen to join the Clarets, but an agreement is nowhere close.
Arsenal do not need Lokonga, as his January loan to Crystal Palace suggested. While at Selhurst Park, the 23-year-old started brightly, but the departure of Patrick Vieira coincided with him losing his spot in the team. Roy Hodgson barely used him in the last phase of the season, as his return to Arsenal was more or less confirmed.
Mikel Arteta does not count on the Belgian, as Arsenal’s pursuit of Romeo Lavia suggests. Irrespective of whether they sign the Southampton star, the Gunners are keen to offload Lokonga, preferably on a permanent deal. They will also look to gain slightly by demanding an asking price more than his purchase cost.
Burnley, however, are only looking for a loan deal at this stage. They may not have the funds for a permanent deal, and there is optimism a compromise could be reached with Arsenal. Ideally, a loan with an option should work in their favour, with the Gunners keen to offload the 23-year-old.
Burnley and Kompany will hope they can seal the deal, as Lokonga could have an important role at Turf Moor. The Clarets will then focus on bringing in more players with Manchester City’s U21 goalkeeper James Trafford, who faces plenty of competition.
