Chelsea have offered a new deal to Levi Colwill, who in turn wants to hold talks with Mauricio Pochettino before deciding his future.
According to Evening Standard, Chelsea have proposed a new contract to Levi Colwill in a bid to keep the young defender at the club. The 20-year-old has instead asked for talks with Mauricio Pochettino before deciding on his long term future, as a host of clubs show interest, including Liverpool.
Levi Colwill impressed during his loan spell at Brighton & Hove Albion, helping the club finish sixth in the Premier League. While he was marginalised earlier in the season under Graham Potter, the arrival of Roberto De Zerbi at the Amex changed the defender’s fortunes.
The 20-year-old played a key role under the Italian manager, becoming a key starter for the Seagulls. His ability to defend the way De Zerbi wants has led to Brighton making a club record £40 million offer. Chelsea had rejected a £30 million offer earlier and did not waste any time in snubbing their latest proposal.
The word is that Chelsea are not contemplating a sale of the 20-year-old, and want to make him an important player here. They are willing to aid his development in the right way. But his depreciating contract may push the Blues into another gear.
Chelsea remain aware of the growing interest in Colwill, especially from Liverpool and Manchester City. The Merseysiders have scouted him and Pep Guardiola’s side are looking for a new left-footed defender. However, it is Brighton who remain the favourites if Colwill decides to leave in the close season.
Chelsea, for their part have now offered a new deal to tempt the 20-year-old. The Blues are likely to push for the defender to sign the new contract, but he has other ideas. He remains open to possibilities, but wants to hold talks with Mauricio Pochettino to find out his standing within the squad.
Colwill has ambitions with the national team, and the door was recently opened during the latest international rounds. He will want a permanent place in that squad before next year’s Euros. To get there, he would want to play regularly, and there are doubts about his prospect at Chelsea.
Hence, only after concrete talks will he make a decision. Chelsea might even look to include him in negotiations for Moises Caicedo. But Brighton are adamant the two deals are seperate. Meanwhile, Liverpool and Manchester City will also attempt to secure his services.
