Liverpool are holding internal discussions on whether to proceed with a bid for 26-year-old Italian international Nicolo Barella.

According to Rudy Galetti, Liverpool are internally discussing the possibility of bidding for Nicolo Barella. The 26-year-old Italian international remains a key target for Jurgen Klopp, but a formal offer will depend on Inter Milan’s asking price.

Nicolo Barella’s name emerged a few weeks ago, and links with a move away from Inter Milan have refused to die down. Premier League sides are most interested in the 26-year-old Italian international, with Liverpool one of the key suitors.

Newcastle United were the first to explore the idea of signing the Italian. However, that pursuit had many complications, including the 26-year-old’s lack of interest in playing for the Magpies. They barely wasted any time and switched their attention towards Sandro Tonali, who has since signed a contract.

From Inter Milan’s point of view, Barella remains untouchable. However, given their financial status, they might entertain a massive offer close to their €80 million valuations for the 26-year-old Italian international.

Liverpool have reportedly been ready to pay that €80 million asking price as Jurgen Klopp considers Barella key to his plans. The German tactician remains intent on adding another midfielder to his ranks after the arrival of Alexis Mac Allister.

The priority is to have someone to operate in deep areas, and they have also held important talks with Khephren Thuram of OGC Nice. Another French star, Manu Kone, was also monitored. But the former seems a more realistic target for Liverpool.

Yet, they are refusing to bow out of the chase for Barella. The potential €80 million price tag could still prove problematic for the Reds operating on a relatively small budget. Hence, Liverpool are internally evaluating the situation with the 26-year-old before deciding on a formal bid.

A formal bid must close the gap on Inter Milan’s valuation and stand a chance to open negotiations. Liverpool may feel they have the power to convince Barella of a move to Merseyside, as only some Italian players move out of their homeland.

Barella could become a solid signing for Liverpool in their quest next season if they bring him. Klopp wants a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League and the Europa League next term.
