Manchester United set to lodge offer to sign Andre Onana

Manchester United are reportedly set to make their official offer for 27-year-old Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana

According to Fabrizio Biasin on Twitter, Premier League giants Manchester United are set to make an offer for in-demand Inter Milan star Andre Onana ahead of a potential summer switch to Old Trafford.

The Cameroon international was a bonafide star for the Nerazzurri last season, aiding their charge for the UEFA Champions League title. Unfortunately, it was not to be as they fell short in the final against Manchester City.

Onana could hope for a personal payback of sorts by joining their arch-rivals Manchester United, who are keen on his services. The Red Devils are in the market for a new number one as David de Gea looks increasingly likely to leave Old Trafford this summer.

The Spaniard’s long career in red appears to have come to an unceremonious end. De Gea had signed a new deal with a lesser salary only for the club to go back on their offer. It is difficult to see how the Red Devils can come off as the better side here given their treatment of the veteran goalkeeper.

But life goes on in football, and with the transfer window open, clubs cannot afford to sit idle. They are expected to make an offer for Onana soon as the pre-season draws near. The in-demand 27-year-old has increasingly elevated his standing in European football following his recent exploits and also attracted attention from Chelsea.

A solid shot-stopper who is also adept with the ball at his feet, Onana is the modern-day sweeper-keeper who can help transform defence into attack. Having played under Erik ten Hag at Ajax Amsterdam, the Cameroonian will be well aware of the Dutchman’s system and will not need a bedding-in period at Old Trafford, at least tactics-wise.

A lot should depend on whether Inter are willing to part with their star man. A reliable goalkeeper is the last line of defence and is worth his weight in gold. It will be difficult for the UEFA Champions League finalists to replace Onana with a goalkeeper possessing similar traits, especially on the cheap.

That said, the ball is now in Manchester United’s court. The Red Devils could twist the odds in their favour by making a deal the Nerazzurri cannot refuse. However, given the ownership merry-go-round, it remains to be seen if they are capable of doing just that.
