Tottenham are reportedly set to sign 26-year-old Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario before the transfer window closes.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Tottenham have now secured a verbal agreement with Italian club Empoli regarding Guglielmo Vicario. And a deal worth €20 million is on the cards. In addition, Fabrizio Romano claims that the 26-year-old has also agreed personal terms with the Premier League club.

Tottenham have been linked with a number of goalkeepers in recent weeks, including David Raya. The Brentford goalkeeper happens to be the first-choice target for Tottenham. But the London club are unwilling to pay his asking price.

The Spaniard has one year left on his current contract and he is valued highly. Spurs were hoping to sign him for a more reasonable price. That has forced them to look at other alternatives. So they have shown interest in players like Giorgi Mamardashvili and Guglielmo Vicario.

It now seems that they are now closing in on a move for the 26-year-old Italian. It will be interesting to see if Vicario’s signing compels Tottenham to move on from Raya and look at the other positions in their squad now.

Spurs will have to strengthen their squad adequately during the summer transfer window. They had a disappointing 2022/23 campaign, as they missed out on Champions League qualification. They will be desperate to get back into the top four and need to improve their squad in order for that to happen.

The 26-year-old Empoli goalkeeper has proven himself in Serie A this past season, and he could prove to be a quality acquisition for Tottenham as well. Despite playing for a mid-table team, Vicario excelled with his distribution skills and shot-stopping.

He is likely to perform better when he is playing at a big club behind a more reliable defensive unit. Furthermore, signing a player of his quality for €20 million seems like a major bargain. So Tottenham should look to seal the transfer quickly.

Vicario could prove to be a more reliable option compared to Hugo Lloris in goal, and he would sort out Tottenham’s goalkeeping situation for the next decade. Meanwhile, Lloris is expected to remain as a squad player until the end of this contract at Tottenham.

Levy shopping in poundland again. This is exactly why we’re in the mess we’re in, Levy going for price over quality.
