Arsenal are closing in on an agreement to acquire the services of 22-year-old Ajax defender Jurrien Timber amidst interest from Liverpool.

According to Florian Plettenberg, Arsenal are very close to agreeing on a deal for Jurrien Timber. The Gunners have been interested in the 22-year-old’s services for a while and could strike a deal with Ajax in the coming days.

Timber has come through the ranks at the Dutch club. He was promoted to Ajax’s first team back in the summer of 2020. The Dutch international has since gone from strength to strength.

The 22-year-old is considered to be one of the most promising young defenders out there. And, there have been quite a few clubs who have been closely monitoring him for over a year.

There was a lot of interest in his services last summer but Ajax were keen on having him at the club for another season. The Dutch club asked their youth product to extend his stay by penning down a new deal and the player agreed.

However, this time around Timber is keen on making the move to a bigger club. He is well aware of Arsenal’s interest in his services and has agreed to join the North London club.

With the player ready to join the club, Arsenal just need to strike a deal with the Dutch club. They have been in constant dialogue with Ajax and an agreement between the two parties is expected to be reached soon.

The 22-year-old is expected to join Mikel Arteta’s team for a fee of around €40-45 million. While Arsenal were defensively solid throughout the campaign, they lacked depth towards the end of the season.

The lack of enough quality defensive depth resulted in them losing out on the league title at the very end of the recently concluded season. And, Arteta wants to ensure they have all bases covered before they once again push for the Premier League title.

Even Liverpool were keen on Timber, the Merseyside club were monitoring the 22-year-old for a while. But, according to a report by Football Insider, they decided against pushing for his services as their priority is to complete a midfield overhaul.

Jurgen Klopp wants to sign multiple midfielders to ensure that they can bounce back after a disappointing season. And, he will shift his focus towards strengthening his defence once all bases in the centre of the park are covered.
