Liverpool in transfer tussle to sign Rav van den Berg

Liverpool will reportedly compete with several clubs in the race to sign 18-year-old Dutch defensive sensation Rav van den Berg.

According to a report by Daily Mail, Rav van den Berg is the subject of interest from Liverpool. The Reds are competing with several clubs in the race to sign the Dutch defensive sensation. But they are behind Brentford, with the Bees progressing in talks over a summer deal.

Rav van den Berg has spent his formative years thus far in his homeland. He had the opportunity to join Dutch heavyweights like Ajax and PSV Eindhoven a few years ago. But the 18-year-old stuck with PEC Zwolle, which has paid off. And he made his first-team debut in May 2021 as a 16-year-old.

Since then, the Dutch defensive sensation has made gradual progress and featured fairly regularly for PEC Zwolle. The teenage wonderkid has turned out 32 times thus far for the Bluefingers, with most of the appearances coming this past season. And the youngster’s progress has captured the attention of several clubs, including Liverpool.

The Reds are focusing on bolstering their midfield more than anything. Alexis Mac Allister has already joined Liverpool, with Warren Zaire-Emery emerging as the latest target. But the Merseyside giants are open to capitalising on opportunities to sign a centre-back if they present themselves.

Recent reports have linked Liverpool with another Dutch centre-back, with Micky van de Ven emerging as a target. And with Joel Matip struggling with fitness issues and Joe Gomez blowing hot and cold, it behoves Liverpool to target a centre-back. In addition, Virgil van Dijk has shown signs of age catching up with him.

Rav van den Berg has now emerged as a viable target for Liverpool. Interestingly, the Dutchman’s elder brother, Sepp, is also a Liverpool player but spent the 2022/23 season on loan at Schalke 04. Meanwhile, the Reds are not the only club pursuing the 18-year-old, with several other suitors keen on signing him.

The report points to Brentford being the front-runner to secure the services of the Dutch defensive sensation. It will be interesting to see if Liverpool can beat the Bees and other suitors to land the 18-year-old this summer.
