Unai Emery’s Aston Villa are closing in on acquiring the services of 26-year-old Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres in a club-record deal.

According to a report by Football Insider, Aston Villa are keen on acquiring the services of Pau Torres. The 26-year-old Villarreal defender is a priority transfer target for Unai Emery, who is looking to strengthen his defence ahead of next season. And the deal to sign him will cost a club record of over £40 million.

Emery has done wonders since joining Aston Villa. He has managed to turn around the fortunes of the club. They were fighting for survival when he joined the club and at the end of the season, but the Spanish boss helped them finish 7th and qualify for European football.

While Villa have done a great job under Emery, there are quite a few areas that still need strengthening. And, at this point in time, he is keen on bolstering his defence. The former Villarreal manager is looking for an alternative to Tyrone Mings. He wants to sign someone who can slot in as the left-sided centre-back. And, Pau Torres is their priority transfer target.

The 26-year-old Spain international can not only feature as a centre-back but can also slot in a left-back when needed. And, his versatility along with his exceptional defensive abilities make him a priority target for both Emery as well as the club’s new sporting director Monchi.

Torres has worked with Emery in the past. The duo had a lot of success back in the day, and the Aston Villa manager believes the 26-year-old’s arrival can help him reach great heights with his new club.

Villa are very close to striking a deal with Villarreal for the Spain international. The Midlands giants have been in contact with the Spanish club for a while now, and they have managed to make good progress. While the Spanish club want an offer of over £40 million for Torres, Aston Villa are keen on reducing the asking price.

With his contract expiring in 2024, they have a realistic chance of striking a deal at a lower price. As far as personal terms are concerned, it might not be that difficult for Aston Villa to meet the demands of Torres who has a good relationship with their manager.
