Liverpool might consider bids for struggling midfield duo Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara, who earn a combined £380,000-a-week wages.

Paul Machin has told Give Me Sport that Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara face uncertain futures at Anfield. Liverpool might cash in on the struggling midfield duo in the summer transfer window. And considering they pocket a combined £380,000-a-week wages, the Reds’ decision might not be surprising.

Fabinho has been a game-changing signing for Liverpool, arriving from AS Monaco in July 2018. The Brazilian’s arrival at Anfield came out of nowhere, with very few journalists reporting any movement. But he had to bide his time at the Merseyside club before becoming a regular for them.

However, the 29-year-old will go down in the annals of Liverpool’s history as an icon, winning every trophy with them. Fabinho has turned out over 200 times for Liverpool, chipping in with 11 goals and ten assists. On the other hand, Thiago Alcantara joined the Reds from Bayern Munich in September 2020.

Liverpool seemed to have struck a coup, considering they paid around £20 million for a bonafide game-changer. But the Spanish international has struggled with fitness issues, thus impacting his influence on the pitch. And he was in and out of the side in the 2022/23 season, with a spate of injuries hampering him.

Meanwhile, Fabinho’s performance levels dipped considerably this past season. And with Liverpool in the market for multiple midfield reinforcements, the Brazilian international has to step up. The same goes for Thiago, who produces impressive showings when available but is often on the sidelines.

But Fabinho and Thiago might not get many opportunities to make their mark next season. That is because according to Paul Machin, Liverpool might cash in on the duo. The two players earn a combined £380,000-a-week in wages. But with James Milner, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain leaving as free agents, the decision seems surprising.

The Reds already need to sign three midfielders to replace Milner, Keita, and Oxlade-Chamberlain. One of them will likely be Alexis Mac Allister, who might complete his move this week. But phasing out the £380,000-a-week duo will be a sensible call instead of selling them this summer.
