Liverpool looking to hijack Chelsea move for Romeo Lavia

Liverpool are looking to acquire the services of Southampton star Romeo Lavia, who has been on the radar of Chelsea.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool are keen on having Romeo Lavia in their ranks. The 19-year-old has put in some impressive shifts in the ongoing season and is on the radar of multiple clubs from across Europe. Chelsea have been working to sign the teenager for a while now. But it seems Liverpool are set to hijack the deal.

Lavia came through the ranks at Manchester City before joining Southampton ahead of the 2022-23 season. The 19-year-old has put in some impressive performances despite his team’s struggle. The Saints have been relegated from the English top flight which has resulted in uncertainty around the future of a few of their stars.

Lavia is one of the players who might not feature for Southampton again. While the 19-year-old’s contract with the Saints runs until the summer of 2027, he is likely to move to a bigger club ahead of next season.

Meanwhile, Manchester City have a buyback clause worth £40 million but that will be active in 2024. As a result, offloading the 19-year-old for a better fee in the summer of 2023 will make sense. Chelsea are one of the clubs that have been closely following the 19-year-old.

The Blues have been making moves behind the scenes to sign Lavia. And, Mauricio Pochettino’s new team have been the frontrunner for his signatures. But, it seems they are all set to face a lot of competition from Liverpool.

The Merseyside club are looking to add a defensive midfielder to the mix. Jurgen Klopp’s men have already secured the signing of Alexis Mac Allister, and it is a matter of days before the official announcement arrives.

However, the Argentine World Cup winner’s arrival will not solve the midfield crisis. They need to sign multiple midfielders to complete the overhaul. As a result, Klopp is keen on adding another midfielder, someone who is a lot more defensive in nature. Lavia seems to fit the bill perfectly. And, he could be a great acquisition for the present as well as the future.
