Manchester United are ready to break the bank and pay €75 million to sign 23-year-old shot-stopper Diogo Costa.

According to a report by Fichajes, Manchester United are keen on having Diogo Costa in their ranks ahead of next season. The 23-year-old goalkeeper has taken his game to the next level in the 2022-23 season, and there are quite a few top clubs from across Europe willing to prise him away from FC Porto.

Costa has come up the ranks at Porto at some pace. The 23-year-old was promoted to their first team back in the summer of 2019. He has gone from strength to strength over the past few seasons. And, at this point in time, he is Porto’s undisputed number one.

The Portugal international has 20 clean sheets in the 2022/23 season. He has been involved in 41 matches in all competitions and has conceded just 30 goals. He kept four clean sheets in his eight Champions League outings. His performances have helped him claim the number one spot in the Portugal senior team. Costa is preferred ahead of veteran Rui Patrício.

The Porto shot-stopper is a highly sought-after player and there could be a bidding war for his services in the summer. Manchester United are one of the clubs keen on having the 23-year-old in their ranks. They are looking to add a new goalkeeper into the mix irrespective of the future of David de Gea.

While the 32-year-old’s contract at the club runs out in the summer, there is an option to extend it by 12 months. De Gea is expected to stay at the club for at least another season. Irrespective of that Ten Hag is keen on having another shot-stopper at his disposal.

He wants to have competition for the number-one spot and believes adding Costa to the mix will bring out the best in both players. And, in the long run, the 23-year-old can cement himself as the number one for the Red Devils.

Manchester United are very serious about their pursuit of the Portugal international and they are all set to table a bid of around €75 million in the coming days. However, there are other clubs keen on having the Porto goalkeeper. As a result, it will be interesting to see who comes out on top.
