Mason Mount has been linked with the move away from Chelsea at the end of the season.
The 24-year-old midfielder has a contract with the Blues until the summer of 2024 and he has not signed an extension with them. Chelsea will not want to lose a player on a free transfer and they will be under pressure to cash in on him this summer if he does not renew his contract. According to journalist Ben Jacobs, the Blues will make a last-ditch attempt to convince the player to sign a new contract with them.
He said to GMS: “The situation is still open until Chelsea at least try something last-ditch. But, even if Mount is leaning towards Manchester United, they’ve still got to strike a deal with Chelsea, and that’s the other component to all of this that I think is worth touching upon.
“Chelsea, even though Mount’s contract is running down, would be looking for something in the region of £70million or £75million. That’s my understanding. I know that some people will say it’s even higher than that, but that’s the ballpark figure that I think Chelsea would want.”
Manchester United are reportedly keen on signing the 24-year-old midfielder and it will be interesting to see if the Red Devils can convince him to move to Old Trafford this summer.
Manchester United need to add more creativity in the middle of the park and Mount would be a quality acquisition for them. Christian Eriksen is on his last legs and Mount could prove to be an upgrade on the Denmark international. The 24-year-old Chelsea midfielder can operate in a number of rows across the midfield and his versatility will be an added bonus.
Mount has been linked with clubs like Arsenal and Liverpool as well. The Gunners have been overly dependent on Martin Odegaard for creativity and Liverpool are in need of reinforcements after the departures of Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner. The 24-year-old Chelsea star could be a quality signing for both clubs.
The Chelsea star has proven himself in the Premier League over the years and he is undoubtedly one of the best players at the club. His departure will come as a major blow for the Blues, but they are powerless to stop him from leaving because of his contract situation.
Apparently, the midfielder could cost around £70-£75 million. Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United certainly have the financial resources to pay that kind of money for him, but they will be hoping to sign the player for a more reasonable amount, given the fact that he has just one year left on his current contract.
It will be interesting to see how the situation develops over the next few weeks.
Mount is a boyhood Chelsea fan and the Blues must look to do everything in their power to hold on to him for as long as possible. The 24-year-old is yet to reach his peak and he could give his best years to the club in the coming seasons.
