Marco Asensio is expected to leave Real Madrid at the end of the season when his contract expires, with Barcelona linked in recent weeks.

Marco Asensio has struggled for regular game time at Santiago Bernabeu, and he has decided not to renew his contract with Real Madrid. A report from Mundo Deportivo claims that the Spaniard is liked at Barcelona, although the Catalan giants are not willing to sign a rival player this summer.

Asensio is good enough to start regularly for most clubs, and he will be hoping to get his career back on track with a move away from Real Madrid. The midfielder has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs, and it will be interesting to see where he ends up.

The Spaniard has struggled for regular game time under Carlo Ancelotti, making just 15 starts in La Liga this season. A player of Asensio’s quality deserves to play more often, and he will be an attractive option in the transfer market this summer. Signing him on a free transfer could prove to be a major bargain.

Barcelona could have certainly used a playmaker like him, and he would have improved the Catalan giants in the final third. Asensio is versatile enough to play in a number of attacking positions, and he could have been an asset for Xavi Hernandez’s side.

Barcelona need to add more quality and depth to their attack. The Blaugrana have done well to secure the league title this year. But they were quite underwhelming in Europe. They will need a bigger and better squad in order to cope with multiple competitions. So it remains to be seen whether they can bring in the necessary reinforcements this summer.

The Catalan giants are going through financial difficulties, and they might not be able to spend big money on players. The opportunity to sign talented players on a free transfer will be hard to turn down.

The Real Madrid midfielder was linked with a move to Barcelona back in 2015 as well. But the Blaugrana failed to sign him back then. Apparently, Barcelona had the opportunity to sign him for a fee of around €5 million at the time.
