Arsenal and Manchester United are among the Premier League sides keen to sign Jules Kounde if he departs Barcelona in the summer.
According to Fichajes, Jules Kounde interests Arsenal and Manchester United the most ahead of the summer. The Barcelona defender could leave Catalonia after only one season as he is reportedly unhappy with his role under Xavi Hernandez.
Last summer was a rollercoaster for Barcelona, although they eventually managed to get all their key signings over the line. Jules Kounde was one of their important purchases in a €50 million, allowing manager Xavi Hernandez to deploy his style for a title-winning season.
Xavi has predominantly used Kounde in the right-back role but often deploys him in the Frenchman’s preferred central defensive position. The French defender is reportedly unhappy with the role he plays at Barcelona.
Reports from Spain suggest Kounde could depart Barcelona for a new challenge. And he will have no shortages of offers. A host of Premier League sides, previously keen to bring the Frenchman, could make their admiration known.
While Manchester City and Chelsea might revisit their previously held interest in the €50 million Barcelona defender, Arsenal and Manchester United could lead the charge. Kounde’s profile might suit both managers, although his price tag could prove problematic.
Manchester United are linked with a move for Kim Min-jae and might prioritise a move for the South Korean. Erik ten Hag may not look to bring two high-profile centre-backs, as one will likely suffice. So either the Napoli star or the €50 million Barcelona defender will become the top target.
Kounde is a high-quality option to rotate with Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez. The Frenchman’s skills in possession could become a solid weapon for Ten Hag as he remains keen to build a solid backline for the new season.
Similarly, for Arsenal, they could look for a ball-playing defender to play a rather hybrid role. While at Barcelona, Kounde has majorly played as a traditional full-back; Mikel Arteta would want this position to invert to his liking.
Ben White has done a commendable job, but Arsenal would like a player who could cover wide and central roles. Kounde fits the bill, although there are alternatives, such as Mohamed Simakan and Ivan Fresnada, to consider for this role.
Barcelona could be a tough negotiator as they manoeuvre through their financial struggles. The Catalans will look for the best deal for their players if they depart, and Kounde might fetch them important funds. They will certainly look to profit from their investment in the €50 million defender, but their final asking price is yet to be determined.
