Tottenham are keen on Aymeric Laporte and ready to rival Barcelona for the wantaway 28-year-old Premier League winner.
Tottenham could explore the chance to sign Aymeric Laporte in the summer, as the defender could leave Manchester City. According to The Times, Spurs will have to rival Barcelona for the 28-year-old Premier League winner’s signature, while Manchester City are already looking at replacement options.
Manchester City are having a commendable season and could win an unprecedented treble in the end. Having thoroughly thrashed Real Madrid at the Etihad to reach the Champions League final, Pep Guardiola’s men are also front-runners for the Premier League and FA Cup triumphs.
For now, Guardiola will give all his attention towards winning the treble. And after that, will make decisions on the future of a few players. Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva and Aymeric Laporte could all depart the club, with interest in the latter particularly rife.
The 28-year-old Premier League winner has been a key signing for Guardiola. But the Spanish international has fallen down the pecking order over the last 18 months. Laporte has only made ten Premier League appearances this season while not starting a single game for Manchester City in the Champions League knockout stages.
He currently languishes behind Ruben Dias, John Stones, Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake in the pecking order at Manchester City. The situation is not good for a Spanish international, and he might look to leave. The club are even ready to sell him for the right offer and remains aware of the growing interest in the defender.
Manchester City are already planning to bring in a replacement, with reports suggesting the club could pay around €100 million for Josko Gvardiol. Kieran Tierney also features on their list. But they must compete hard with Newcastle United for the Arsenal star.
As for Laporte, he remains keen to join Barcelona amid growing interest from the Catalan giants. The newly-crowned La Liga champions have been chasing the 28-year-old Premier League winner for some time now. And the upcoming window could present them with the opportunity.
However, much will depend on Manchester City’s asking price and Barcelona’s ability to make important financial decisions. As things stand, they face competition from Tottenham for the 28-year-old Premier League winner. Spurs are in the market for a left-sided centre-back to aid their progress.
Tottenham have explored plenty of options in the past, including Marc Guehi and Allesandro Bastoni. While the Crystal Palace star could yet be achievable, the Inter defender may prove difficult to acquire. Hence, they have switched their attention towards Laporte, hoping to convince the 28-year-old Premier League winner to join them.
On paper, it may seem difficult for Tottenham to convince Laporte to leave a team that guarantees trophies for Spurs, who are struggling. Moreover, the north Londoners will not offer Champions League football and may not play in Europe at all if things don’t go their way.
Despite the lure of playing in London, Laporte might prefer to wait for Barcelona to make their move. With two years left on his deal, he could still have time on his hands and get the right move back to Spain rather than join the bandwagon at Spurs.
