Manchester United are interested in acquiring the services of 29-year-old Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic.

According to a report by Football Insider, Manchester United are keen on having Mateo Kovacic in their ranks. The 29-year-old’s future at Chelsea is uncertain, and a few Premier League clubs are closely monitoring the situation.

Kovacic joined the Blues back in the summer of 2018 from Real Madrid. It was a one-year loan deal that was made permanent in the following summer window. The Croatian international has been a great servant of the club for quite a few years now.

He has featured in 220 matches for Chelsea and has been involved in 21 goals. However, it seems his time at Stamford Bridge is about to end. The 24-year-old’s contract at the club runs until the summer of 2024.

With just over a year left on his contract, the Blues need to make a decision regarding his future. They did try to extend his stay but the negotiations reached a standstill. And, it seems the only option they have is to offload him in the summer. That is because the club won’t want to lose out on him for free in the following summer.

While there are doubts regarding his future, the 29-year-old still remains an integral part of their first team setup. He has featured in 36 matches in the ongoing season and has been involved in four goals. Kovacic has been on the pitch for over 2,400 minutes despite the Blues having signed multiple midfielders of late.

However, with his contract running out, quite a few clubs are interested in his services. The 29-year-old is on the wishlist of Erik ten Hag, the Manchester United boss. Ten Hag has had a successful start to his career at Manchester United, and he wants to strengthen his squad in order to take the next step.

The Dutch manager is keen on having a new world-class midfielder in his ranks. And, he would love to have the former Real Madrid midfielder at his disposal. Kovacic can easily slot into the Manchester United system and he has played with Casemiro in the past. The duo could do wonders for the Red Devils.

However, they are waiting for Chelsea to lower their asking price. The Blues want around £30 to £40 million for the Croatian international. But, with Manchester City also keen on the 29-year-old, Manchester United are willing to pay around £30 million and get the deal over the line.
