Liverpool are keen on signing 26-year-old Nicolo Barella and they are hoping to lure the Inter Milan midfielder to Anfield in the summer.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Liverpool want to sign Nicolo Barella ahead of next season. The 26-year-old’s future at Inter Milan is uncertain and he might be on the move in the summer. Quite a few clubs are monitoring his situation and might push for his signatures in the upcoming transfer window.
Barella started off at Cagliari Calcio, coming through the ranks at the club before becoming a key figure in their first team. His performances attracted the attention of Inter Milan who signed him in the summer of 2019. It was an initial loan move that saw him join the Italian giants. And, the club made it permanent in the following summer.
The 26-year-old has gone from strength to strength since joining the Nerazzurri. The Italian international has featured in over 175 matches for Inter Milan and has been involved in 61 goals. As far as the ongoing season is concerned, Barella has 16 goal contributions in 42 matches.
The Italian midfielder is considered an integral part of the Inter Milan squad. And, in general, they would love to have him in their ranks for years to come. However, Inter Milan’s financial situation of late is a bit critical. And, despite having a contract that runs until the summer of 2026, the 26-year-old could be on the move in the summer.
Inter Milan are currently struggling to make it into the top four of Serie A. They are sixth in the Italian league with 54 points after 31 games. They are two points behind fourth-placed AS Roma who have a game in hand. If they lose out on a top-four spot and fail to win the Champions League, they will not feature in the UCL next season.
Missing out on Champions League football will result in a decent financial hit which they cannot afford at this point in time. And, they will be forced to offload players in the summer. Inter Milan will have to raise around €60 million and reduce their wage bill to be financially stable.
And, since there is a lot of interest in Barella’s services and he is one of their most valuable assets, the 26-year-old could be available for a transfer. Meanwhile, Liverpool who have been interested in the Italian international are well aware of the situation.
The Merseyside club are in desperate need of a midfield overhaul and their manager is keen on having Barella in their ranks. The 26-year-old could easily slot in Klopp’s midfield and he could solve quite a few of their headaches.
Liverpool want to land him at the club along with a few other midfielders. They are willing to go all the way for his signature. As a result, it will be interesting to see if they can manage to land the Italian international.
