Liverpool have suffered a huge blow in their pursuit of Mason Mount as Chelsea are willing to compromise to seal a contract extension.
According to a report by Simon Phillips via GiveMeSport, Chelsea are closing in on a contract extension with Mason Mount. The Blues are willing to compromise in order to seal an agreement with the 24-year-old midfielder, who has been on the radar of multiple clubs across Europe.
Mount’s future at the club has been uncertain for a while now. There were reports suggesting that the contract extension talks came to a standstill as the player was not happy with the terms of the deal proposed by his club. And, he was all set to part ways with his boyhood club in the summer.
However, as per the latest information, the club are willing to compromise. They earlier wanted the England international to pen down a long-term contract with the club. But, the player was not keen on doing so. He wanted to lower the length of the new contract the club was offering and they might have just agreed to it.
Simon Phillips said, “But now the Chelsea board are willing to lower the length for that contract to something similar to what Chilwell has got, with similar terms as well, albeit with different bonuses.”
Mount’s current contract with the Blues runs until the summer of 2024. He has less than 18 months left on his £80,000-a-week deal. And, there were talks of a possible exit from the club that he has been part of since his childhood days.
The 24-year-old was linked with a move to Liverpool. The Merseyside club were keen on acquiring his services as they look to rebuild their midfield ahead of next season. Jurgen Klopp’s team have underperformed in the ongoing season because of their below-par midfield. And, they are on the hunt for new midfielders.
Mount was a priority for them as they were aware of his contract situation. But, it seems they will have to look elsewhere as the Blues are willing to compromise to pen down a new deal with the England international.
The Chelsea midfielder has not had the best of times in the ongoing season. He has featured in 34 matches and has nine goal contributions, which is a significant downfall when we compare it with his previous season where he had 29 goal contributions across all competitions.
With the Blues ready to revise their terms, Mount is likely to pen down a new deal with the club. And, he will be eager to bounce back to his best.
