Real Madrid ready to offer £90 million to sign Reece James

La Liga champions Real Madrid are reportedly prepared to offer £90 million to sign Chelsea right-back Reece James this summer.

According to a report by Football Insider, Reece James has become a top target for Real Madrid. The reigning La Liga champions want to sign the Chelsea wide man in the summer transfer window. And they are ready to table a bid worth £90 million to secure his services.

Reece James has come leaps and bounds since becoming a regular for Chelsea in the 2019/20 season. The English international is one of several academy graduates who have bucked the trend to become pivotal figures for the Blues. And he is among the best full-backs in the world.

The 23-year-old has also established a foothold in the English national squad, where he competes with several right-backs. But James has endured a frustrating 2022/23 season due to persistent injury problems. And he has managed just over 1,500 minutes of game time due to that. But that has not deterred prospective suitors, including Real Madrid.

The reigning La Liga champions hold a long-standing interest in the Chelsea wide man. They have been monitoring James’s progress since he became a regular for the west London club. And Real Madrid’s continued interest in the youngster is understandable, considering Dani Carvajal’s recent inconsistencies.

The veteran Spaniard has struggled with fitness issues in the last few years. In addition, Lucas Vazquez is no longer a dependable backup right-back for Real Madrid. And with Alvaro Odriozola not in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans, Real Madrid must sign a top-class right-back. James has thus emerged as a viable target.

But a summer move might be a tall order, with Chelsea unwilling to sell the English international. However, Los Blancos will test Chelsea’s resolve with a bid in the region of £90 million. That is a sizable sum, but it might not be enough to tempt the west London club.

The Blues do need to sell a few players to evade Financial Fair Play Sanctions. But with James being one of Chelsea’s best players, a sale is unlikely, even for £90 million. In addition, recent reports have claimed that the 23-year-old does not want to leave Chelsea. And while he wants to join Real Madrid, that will only happen a few years down the line.
