Newcastle United are interested in signing 26-year-old Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen ahead of next season.
According to SPORT, Newcastle United are keen on having the services of Andreas Christensen. The Magpies will be looking to bolster their squad ahead of next season and have their eyes set on the 26-year-old defender.
Meanwhile, Christensen is very happy at Barcelona. He has been an integral part of Xavi’s team since arriving from Chelsea, and they are in no mood to let him leave. Even the player is keen on continuing with the Catalan giants. However, their financial struggles may result in a possible sale if the Magpies present the right offer.
The 26-year-old defender joined the Chelsea youth academy back in the summer of 2012 from Brondby IF. He came through the ranks at the Blues and became an important part of their first-team squad. Christensen even played an important role in helping them win the UEFA Champions League a few seasons back.
However, the Blues failed to extend his contract at the club and the 26-year-old joined Barcelona ahead of the ongoing season as a free agent. He has gone from strength to strength since arriving at the club. The Denmark international has featured in 25 matches for Xavi’s team.
He has been one of the first names on the team sheet of the Spanish manager. Christensen has forged a deadly pair with Ronald Araujo in the centre of the defence. The duo is one of the reasons why Barcelona have conceded the least goals in the ongoing La Liga season.
While Christensen is happy at the club and has no intentions of leaving, the Magpies are still willing to try their luck. They are aware of the financial crisis that Barcelona are under. And, are planning to offer them a deal they cannot refuse.
The Catalan giants are in desperate need of funds. They need to raise a significant amount in order to stabilize their financial condition. And with Newcastle United willing to spend £50 million to acquire the 26-year-old, they might be forced to sell one of their most consistent performers.
The Magpies are in search of a right-sided centre-back for their massive project at hand. And, they believe the arrival of Christensen who has won the Champions League could help their cause as they look top push for the Premier League title next season.
