Barcelona are interested in signing 32-year-old Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan ahead of next season.
According to a report by Football Insider, Barcelona are keen on acquiring the services of Ilkay Gundogan. The Catalan giants are looking to bolster their squad ahead of next season amidst their financial crisis. They have identified the 32-year-old as a potential target.
Gundogan’s current contract at City ends in the summer. And, at this point in time, there are no talks of a renewal. With the German international set to be a free agent in a few months’ time, a lot of clubs are keeping an eye on the situation.
The 32-year-old joined the Premier League club back in the summer of 2016 from Borussia Dortmund. And, he has gone from strength to strength since joining the team in blue. The German international has featured in 290 matches and has 90 goal contributions to his name.
He has been an integral part of the Manchester City squad ever since joining them. And, he has worn the captain’s armband on several occasions in the ongoing season. Gundogan has eight goal contributions so far in his 37 outings.
He has been a mainstay in their team in the ongoing season as they look to make it three Premier League titles in a row. While City do want the 32-year-old to extend his stay at the club, the player is yet to make any commitments.
As per the reports, Barcelona have already met the German international’s representatives. The Catalan giants are keen on acquiring him as a free agent in the summer.
Xavi has done a great job at the club ever since taking charge. But, he has identified a few key areas where reinforcement is required. The Spanish manager believes that they need more quality in the centre of the park. He wants an experienced midfielder and Gundogan is an ideal candidate to take the team forward.
The Catalan giants are going through a major financial crisis. And, they are well aware of the fact that spending money on signing players is not an option at this point in time. Barcelona have had trouble registering players of late. And, they will have to offload a few before pushing for a new signing.
With Gundogan available for free in a few months’ time, they don’t want to miss out on this opportunity amidst all the financial troubles. However, it won’t be that easy a task as a lot of clubs from across Europe have their eyes on the 32-year-old.
