Chelsea are reportedly keen on signing 26-year-old Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson, a target for Tottenham.
Dean Henderson is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest, and he has made quite an impression with regular football at the Premier League club. A report from Football Insider claims that Chelsea have now joined Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign the 26-year-old Manchester United goalkeeper.
Henderson has dropped down the pecking order at Manchester United, and he needed to leave on loan to play regularly. The 26-year-old cannot afford to sit on the bench at a big club at this stage of his career. He needs to play regularly in order to fulfil his potential.
It will be interesting to see if Chelsea are prepared to offer him the platform he needs in the coming seasons. The Blues have been using Kepa Arrizabalaga as their first-choice goalkeeper. And Edouard Mendy has fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.
The Senegalese international is likely to leave in the summer, and Henderson will probably replace him in the first team. The 26-year-old will not want to be a backup option to the Spaniard. So it remains to be seen whether Chelsea can provide him assurances regarding game time. Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur are keen on signing the Manchester United goalkeeper as well.
Club legend Hugo Lloris has not been at his best this season and the French international has cost his side valuable points with this error-prone performances. And he might be on his way out of Tottenham in the summer.
The 36-year-old remains an important member of the first team. But he cannot hope to start for Tottenham regularly anymore. The London club will have to bring in a quality goalkeeper at the end of the season, and Henderson certainly fits the profile.
The 26-year-old will be desperate to prove himself at a big club. And moving to Tottenham could help him cement his place in the England lineup as well. It will be interesting to see if Chelsea or Spurs can agree on a reasonable fee with Manchester United.
Chelsea might not be able to provide the player with European football next season. And it will be interesting to see if Henderson decides to hold out for a club in the Champions league. Tottenham are currently fighting for a place in the top four and they are certainly better placed to secure Champions League football compared to their London rivals.
