Tottenham are keen on Manuel Ugarte as the Sporting CP midfielder could move on in the summer for his present release clause.

According to Record via Sport Witness, Manuel Ugarte remains a firm target for Tottenham in the summer. The Uruguayan midfielder was in their sights in January. The summer window could open up a possibility for a transfer, having impressed Spurs chiefs.

Manuel Ugarte has seen a stellar rise in stature at Sporting CP this season. He has made 37 appearances for the team, taking them into the quarter-finals of the Europa League. He was instrumental in the victory over Arsenal at the Emirates. The report claims that game may have confirmed Tottenham’s interest.

The 21-year-old South American midfielder missed the first leg against the Gunners due to a suspension. However, he put in a top-class performance against the Premier League leaders to defeat them on penalties. He got sent off late in the game, meaning he would miss the quarter-finals’ first leg.

Meanwhile, Tottenham have watched Ugarte since the World Cup, along with other stars. While he failed to make the mark in Qatar, his performances against Arsenal and overall in a Sporting CP shirt have convinced Spurs of a move.

They could approach in the summer as Tottenham seek new players in critical midfield positions. They might look to bring in the 21-year-old South American midfielder to replace the out-of-sorts Yves Bissouma or steadily phase out Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg out of their system.

Either way, they are keen and could sit down with his club to discuss a move. Sporting CP wants to offer him a new contract with a substantial pay rise. While there’s an indication of acceptance, Ugarte’s entourage were not impressed with plans to increase his release clause from €60 million to €80 million.

With interest from Newcastle United and now Tottenham, he may feel the chances evaporating with a larger release clause. Hence, he might look for a move in the summer and start his career at a big English side.

Barcelona also have a potential interest, but their finances will prevent a move from materialising. Tottenham could see themselves as front runners for the midfielder. They have good relations with Sporting, having already signed Pedro Porro in January.

Ugarte could evaluate his options before deciding on his future. Tottenham could become an attractive destination, particularly if they make it to the Champions League next. Either way, a move to London could open the doors for a transfer.
