Chelsea rekindle pursuit of Edson Alvarez

Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing 25-year-old Ajax midfield general Edson Alvarez at the end of the season.

Edson Alvarez was linked with a move to Stamford Bridge at the start of the season. But the move did not materialise. A report from 90min claims that Chelsea are prepared to revive interest in the 25-year-old at the end of the season.

The Blues will need to add more quality and depth to their midfield. And Alvarez could prove to be a solid acquisition. The Mexican international has proven his quality for Ajax and Mexico in recent seasons. And he is ready to make the step up to a big club like Chelsea.

The Blues could lose N’Golo Kante as a free agent at the end of the season, despite claims to the contrary. So they will have to replace him adequately. Edson Alvarez can operate as a defensive midfielder as well as a centre-back, and he will be a handy option for Graham Potter next season.

Ajax were not prepared to sell the player at the start of the campaign, but they could be more receptive to the idea of letting him leave at the end of the season. It remains to be seen whether Chelsea can agree on a fee with Ajax in the coming months.

Alvarez was keen on a move to the Premier League last summer as well and he is likely to be attracted to the idea of joining Chelsea ahead of next season. The 25-year-old midfield general is entering his peak years and he is likely to develop further with experience and coaching.

He could prove to be a quality Premier League midfielder in the coming seasons if he manages to adapt to English football quickly and fulfil his potential. The tough-tackling midfielder will add a defensive cover to the side and help the creative players to operate with more freedom. He is likely to improve the Blues immensely and could form a quality partnership alongside Enzo Fernandez.

However, Chelsea are unlikely to play Champions League football next season. So it will be interesting to see if their inability to provide European football affects the chances of signing a top player like Alvarez.
