La Liga leaders Barcelona are interested in re-signing Paris Saint-Germain star forward Lionel Messi ahead of next season.

According to Foot Mercato, Barcelona are keen on bringing Lionel Messi back to the club in the summer. The Catalan giants have been in talks with their former star and want to re-sign him ahead of next season. And the veteran playmaker is himself keen on returning.

Messi was forced to leave Barcelona back in the summer of 2021. The Catalan giants were in a financial crisis and could not register Messi’s new contract due to Financial Fair Play rules. And, the 35-year-old was forced to look for clubs elsewhere.

Paris Saint-Germain saw it as an opportunity to land the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner. The French club offered him a great contract and Messi joined them on a two-year deal. His two-year contract is all set to end in a few months’ time. And, he has not opted for the option to extend his contract at PSG for another 12 months.

While PSG are keen on having him extend his stay in the French capital, the player is not sure about it. And, as things stand, he will be on his way out in a few months’ time. Messi is looking for opportunities elsewhere and has the thought of returning to the Catalan giants in the summer.

Barcelona are also interested in having Messi back in their ranks. The Catalan giants have been sensational in the league. They are currently at the top of the points table and have a nine-point lead over second-placed Real Madrid.

However, they have struggled in European competitions. The Spanish giants have been knocked out of both the Champions League and Europa League. They are looking for more firepower, and there are not many better than the Argentine World Cup winner, Messi.

The 35-year-old forward has been on fire in the ongoing season. Messi has a total of 35 goal contributions in his 31 matches. While PSG have not had the best of times in the ongoing season, Messi surely has done his bit for the team.

The Argentina international is all set to part ways with the French defending champions in the summer. Clubs from the MLS are interested in his services alongside his former club Barcelona. While he would love to return to the Catalan giants, they have not got their finances under control yet. And, his return will depend on the Financial Fair Play rules.
