Liverpool are interested in signing 28-year-old Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic ahead of next season.

According to TalkSPORT via Fichajes, Liverpool have their eyes on Mateo Kovacic. The Reds are looking for a midfield overhaul ahead of next season and they have identified the 28-year-old as a potential transfer target.

Kovacic first joined Chelsea back in the summer of 2018. The Croatian midfielder joined them on a season-long loan with an option to buy. His impressive performances forced the Blues to trigger the €45 million buy option.

The 28-year-old has been an integral part of Chelsea ever since joining them. The Croatian international has made a total of 210 appearances for the club and has 20 goal contributions to his name.

Despite the number of signings that the Blues have made over the past two transfer windows, Kovacic still remains one of their most important players. The former Real Madrid midfielder has made 26 appearances in all competitions. And, has three goal contributions to his name in the ongoing season.

The Croatia international’s contract at the club runs until the summer of 2024. And, with just over a year left in his contract, he might be on his way out in the summer. While the club is keen on retaining his services they might not be left with any other option than to sell him.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are keeping an eye on Kovacic’s situation at Chelsea. The Merseyside club will head into the summer transfer market in search of multiple midfielders. Their priority is to push for Jude Bellingham, but they are well aware of the fact that there are of lot teams who want him. And, it won’t be easy to sign the Borussia Dortmund midfielder.

Klopp’s men also have Kovacic on their radar. The 28-year-old perfectly suits the Liverpool manager’s needs. He is composed in the centre of the park and has a great defensive work rate. As a result, the Merseyside club are keen on signing him.

With the number of signings they have made over the past two windows, they don’t really have an option other than to offload players. The Blues could consider letting one of their most important players leave if they receive an important bid in the range of €40-50 million.
