Real Madrid are reportedly interested in signing 26-year-old Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell this summer.
A report from Defensa Central claims that Real Madrid are hoping to improve their full-back department. And they have identified the 26-year-old Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell as a target.
Chelsea manager Graham Potter has mostly preferred Marc Cucurella as his first-choice left-back. But Chilwell has recently usurped the Spaniard after regaining fitness. So it remains to be seen whether Chelsea are prepared to let go of the Englishman if a reasonable offer is presented.
The former Leicester City defender has not been able to live up to the expectations since his big-money move to Stamford Bridge because of persistent injury problems. However, the 26-year-old remains a quality player and could prove to be a useful addition to the Real Madrid defence. He has been linked with Manchester City as well.
Ferland Mendy has been quite underwhelming since joining Real Madrid, who will have to bring in an upgrade in that department. Chilwell will be determined to prove his quality at a high level. And the opportunity to join Real Madrid could prove to be hard to turn down for the Chelsea star.
The English defender will be hoping to establish himself as a regular starter for club and country in the coming months. If Real Madrid can provide him with game-time assurances, there is no reason why he would not be keen on joining them.
A move to Santiago Bernabeu and regular game time under Carlo Ancelotti could help him cement his place under Gareth Southgate as well. With the Euros coming up in 2024, Chilwell will need to play regularly to boost his chances of selection for England. Meanwhile, Real Madrid will have to add more depth and quality to their side if they want to compete on all fronts.
While they have done well in the Champions League so far, it has been a disappointing season for them in La Liga. The defending champions currently find themselves nine points adrift of league leaders and bitter rivals Barcelona. With 13 matches remaining in the competition, it seems highly unlikely that Real Madrid will be able to close down the gap and reclaim their domestic crown.
The defence is certainly an area that is a need of improvement. And it remains to be seen whether the Spanish joints can agree on a deal with Chelsea in the coming months. But recent reports have suggested that the Blues do not want to sell the 26-year-old.
