Manu Kone is keen on a move to Chelsea and following in the footsteps of his idol Didier Drogba, as he ponders a summer departure.
According to Christian Falk via Caught Offside, Manu Kone would readily sign for Chelsea if given the opportunity. The 21-year-old Bundesliga talent wants to follow in the footsteps of his idol Didier Drogba. The Blues might show an interest in recruiting the holding midfielder, but he remains contracted to Borussia Monchengladbach until 2025.
Manu Kone continues establishing himself as one of the top midfielders in the Bundesliga. His importance for Borussia Monchengladbach have come to the fore, with the French-born star one of the first names on the teamsheet each week this season.
Like many other players in European football and possibly at Monchengladbach, Kone also holds ambitions to play for a top side that challenges for honours. According to Christian Falk, the player would like a move to Chelsea or Real Madrid. He reportedly has a soft spot for the Blues as he looks to emulate his idol and Chelsea legend Didier Drogba.
Falk said, “He’s been always dreaming of two clubs: one is Real Madrid, and the other is Chelsea! “Kone brought up Chelsea because he was a big fan of Didier Drogba, which explains his fascination with the London-based club. There’s nothing concrete at the moment, but you see that he’s potentially going to leave in the summer.”
“He’s already talking openly about new clubs and you see he’s interested in England, and there are many clubs that would be on the table. With Chelsea, he’s put another one himself in.”
Whether Chelsea are considering a move for the midfielder remains the question. Todd Boehly certainly will re-enter the market for a new midfielder despite spending a British record sum to sign Enzo Fernandez in January.
Their ideas might revolve around signing someone for the holding midfield role and allowing Fernandez to move further. They are searching for a viable partner for the Argentine, with Declan Rice as one of their primary targets.
With Arsenal currently leading the chase for Rice, Chelsea could miss out on several other targets if they fail to finish in the top four. As things stand, they are favourites to finish outside those places, which will impact their transfer policy.
The 21-year-old Bundesliga talent certainly has a maturity about his game, but whether Chelsea are willing to take a risk on another young player remains the question. He could yet get a big move in the summer, considering he will enter the final two years of his deal, although Monchengladbach have the option of a further season.
Meanwhile, the player has been linked with Liverpool as well. The Reds are in need of midfield reinforcements and the Bundesliga talent could prove to be a solid long-term addition for them.
