Premier League top-four hopefuls Newcastle United are reportedly eyeing a summer move for Dominic Calvert-Lewin despite a poor campaign.

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin is the primary target of Newcastle United as they plot a major squad overhaul in the summer to take the next step to become a mega juggernaut in world football.

This is not the first time the Magpies have been linked with a move for the Everton striker. They were reportedly credited with an interest last season as well.

In fact, Calvert-Lewin was linked with a move away from Everton for the entirety of the last season, with Arsenal showing an interest in his services before opting to sign Gabriel Jesus. There does not seem to be a lot of buzz surrounding his potential exit at the moment, though, which might be a direct result of his injury problems and underwhelming last couple of campaigns.

The 25-year-old is in his seventh season at Goodison Park, which has been marked by two terrific scoring seasons in 2019/20 and 2020/21, where he netted 29 of his 46 total Premier League goals.

Despite his lack of output in recent months, Calvert-Lewin already has 11 senior international caps for England to his name. Given Everton’s struggles, he may be seen as a declining asset, who the Toffees may look to offload in the summer as they look to provide Sean Dyche with a sizable war chest to replenish the squad according to his needs if he keeps them afloat this season.

It looks like Calvert-Lewin is still very much in the sights of Newcastle United, despite the fact that he has failed to reach the heights of his peak seasons. If Newcastle qualify for Europe next season, which is looking likely given they are currently pushing for Champions League qualification.

That would obviously mean they will need a bigger squad with multiple options. So it won’t be a surprise to see them pursue another striker in the upcoming summer transfer window, especially after offloading Chris Wood this past January.

Scoring goals has proven difficult in recent weeks as Premier League clubs adjust to the Magpies’ new-found status. Only two goals in the last five top-flight games have sparked concern around St. James’ Park. Earlier this season, Newcastle just could not stop scoring, recording comprehensive victories over Fulham, Brentford, Southampton, and Leicester City.

The goals have dried up at exactly the wrong time, as proven by another blank in the Carabao Cup final. Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron have failed to maintain their early-season purple patches, while Allan Saint-Maximin and Alexander Isak are still adjusting physically after returning from long injury layoffs.

Eddie Howe’s side can benefit from more striking firepower in their ranks. And signing a clutch striker like Calvert-Lewin for a reasonable fee would be an excellent piece of business as he will bring aerial prowess and canny poaching skills inside the opposition box.

Newcastle also have an elite crosser in their squad in the form of skipper Kieran Trippier, who can combine with his compatriot to lethal effect. Thus, it will be very interesting to see how this story develops in the summer transfer window.
