Premier League champions Manchester City have reportedly approached Julian Alvarez, a target for Barcelona, with a contract running until 2028.
According to reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Julian Alvarez is yet to respond to an approach from Manchester City. The Premier League champions have offered to extend his deal by twelve months until 2028. The Argentine international is a target for Barcelona.
Julian Alvarez has seen his stock skyrocket in the last couple of years. He first rose to prominence by guiding River Plate to the league title in his homeland in the 2021 season. And the 23-year-old has become a solid contributor for Manchester City since arriving at the Etihad last summer.
The Argentine international was also a pivotal figure for his national side in the triumphant 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign. Meanwhile, Alvarez has been solid for Manchester City, managing ten goals and two assists in less than 1,500 minutes of action. The player’s progress has not gone unnoticed either, with Barcelona being a prospective suitor.
Barcelona will look to bring a long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski in the coming years. While they do not need to replace the veteran striker anytime soon, it is worth noting that he is well into his thirties. So it behoves Barcelona to scour the market for a long-term solution for the central striker’s berth.
Alvarez has thus emerged as a viable target for the Blaugrana. And recent reports have claimed that the Catalan giants have made their first move to sign the 23-year-old. But Manchester City will work hard to keep hold of the World Cup winner. Pep Guardiola has also spoken about his admiration of the young striker.
Meanwhile, in the wake of rumours of Barcelona’s approach, the Premier League champions are working to secure his future. And the Citizens have offered the Argentine international a one-year contract extension. But Alvarez is yet to respond, giving Barcelona a glimmer of hope.
However, Alvarez will likely come with a hefty price tag, potentially putting Barcelona in a spot of bother. For now, the 23-year-old’s future at Manchester City is not set in stone. And Barcelona might launch the offensive over a move later this year.
