Tottenham rival Liverpool in Nicolo Barella pursuit

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in signing Italian international Nicolo Barella, a target for Liverpool, this summer.

According to a report from Calciomercatoweb, Tottenham have joined the race to sign Nicolo Barella. And they will face competition from Premier League rivals Liverpool for the 26-year-old Inter Milan midfielder.

Barella is undoubtedly one of the best midfielders in Serie A. And he could prove to be a sensational acquisition for Tottenham. Antonio Conte has quality midfielders like Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma at his disposal.

However, the Tottenham boss needs to bring in someone who will add creativity and control in the middle of the park. Barella has a different skill set from the players already at Tottenham and could improve them immensely.

Similarly, Liverpool are in desperate need of central midfield reinforcements, especially with players like Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner on their way out in the summer. All three players will be free agents, and the Reds have not agreed on extensions with them yet.

Jurgen Klopp needs to improve his midfield department if the Reds want to challenge for the major trophies once again. And they have been linked with players like Jude Bellingham. It appears that Nicolo Barella is on their transfer wishlist as well.

The Italian would be a cheaper option compared to Bellingham, with the England international valued at around £130 million by Borussia Dortmund. It will be interesting to see if Liverpool can beat Tottenham to the services of the 26-year-old Italian international.

Tottenham are in a better position in the Premier League table right now. And they should be able to finish in the top four and secure Champions League qualification. That could give them a major advantage in the transfer chase.

A player like Barella will want to play in the Champions League next season. And the opportunity to play under one of the best Italian managers of modern times in Antonio Conte could be tempting for the player. Also, he has played under Conte before at Inter Milan, so a reunion might be on the cards this summer.
