Liverpool have been linked with a move for the Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella.

According to a report from Fichajes, Liverpool are one of the several clubs keeping tabs on 26-year-old Italian international Nicolo Barella, who has a contract at Inter Milan until the summer of 2026.

The report claims that Inter Milan will be able to rake in a lot of money if the player leaves in the summer and his contract situation will allow the Italian club to demand a premium for his services. Barella has a market value of €70 million.

Apparently, Inter Milan are prepared to sanction the departure of a number of players if they feel to qualify for the UEFA Champions League and Barella happens to be one of those assets. Alessandro Bastoni and Lautaro Martinez could be sold as well.

Inter Milan are currently well-placed to secure Champions League qualification, and they are second in the standings. It will be interesting to see if they can stay there and secure their place in the European tournament next year.

The loss of Champions League football would be a devastating blow to the club’s finances and Inter Milan simply cannot afford to miss out on the qualification. Meanwhile, Barella has proven himself to be a quality midfielder in the Italian league and for his country. He was one of the best players during Italy’s UEFA Euro 2020-winning campaign in 2021.

The player has the ability to succeed in the Premier League as well, and Liverpool could certainly use someone like him. The midfield area has been a major concern this season, and Jurgen Klopp could certainly use a top-class player like Barella.

The Italian will be an upgrade on players like Jordan Henderson and James Milner. Meanwhile, the likes of Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be free agents in the summer. It is clear that Liverpool will have to sign a number of midfielders and Barella would be a quality investment.

The Italian is entering his peak years and a world-class coach like Klopp could help him improve further and fulfil his world-class potential. It remains to be seen how the situation develops over the next few months.

If Inter Milan fail to secure Champions League qualification, the Reds should look to come forward with a tempting offer for the Italian international midfielder and snap him up. But Liverpool have also shown interest in other midfielders, including Mason Mount.
